#TVforHE – Pick of the Week – The Secret Rules of Modern Living

As part of ERA’s commitment to helping licence holders make best use of the material available to them, we have decided to start highlighting our ‘top pick’ each week.

This Thursday on BBC4, The Secret Rules of Modern Living(9pm) looks at the importance of algorithms in modern day life.

From the BBC:

Without us noticing, modern life has been taken over. Algorithms run everything from search engines on the internet, to sat navs and credit card data security – they even help us travel the world, find love and save lives.

Mathematician Professor Marcus du Sautoy demystifies the hidden world of algorithms. By showing us some of the algorithms most essential to our lives, he reveals where these 2,000-year-old problem solvers came from – how they work, what they have achieved and how they are now so advanced they can even programme themselves.

The programme will offer an interesting and accessible look at algorithms, which may be of use when teaching this section of mathematical theory.
