#TVforTeachers – Pick of the Week – Youth Mental Health Documentaries

As part of ERA’s commitment to helping licence holders make best use of the material available to them, we have decided to start highlighting our ‘top pick’ each week. We’re hoping to reveal multiple educational uses for a single episode, series, or film with enough time to act as a ‘heads up’ for teachers to be able to record, or access the material.

This Wednesday (the 1st July) on Channel 4 two mental health documentaries will air back to back. Both programmes offer a close look at the realities of being a young person who lives with mental illness.

Kids in Crisis? (10pm, Channel4)

This programme meets families from across the UK whose children are being separated from them to receive treatment for mental health issues, sometimes hundreds of miles from home.

On the Edge and Online (11pm, Channel4)

From Channel4:

It can be lonely living with a mental illness. A unique experiment brings together young adults with mental illnesses in a remarkable online forum. Will they find the support they need?

These programmes could be used to start a discussion in a PSHE lesson in a secondary school, or as part of a psychology or health & social care module.
