Synopsis
This second programme examines the magnetic pull of Chicago and the North. Migrants' letters home promised a better life of freedom and dignity; the black-owned newspaper The Chicago Defender encouraged escape from the South, and black porters on the railway strove to help as many migrants as possible to make the journey.
