Synopsis
Five years ago Britain was in financial crisis. On a day when speculators made fortunes and the Bank of England lost billions propping up the pound, the prime minister twice raised interest rates, abandoned the policy he said was vital for the nation's future, and the pound crashed out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism. Using testimonies from politicians, officials and speculators at the heart of the action, the programme tells the story of one of the most extraordinary days in modern British history.
