02: War and Peace | Comrades

Duration: 44'57''

Synopsis

Like almost all Soviet 18-year-olds Valera Krylov must now do his national service - two years in the Red Army, 1,000 miles from home. The film follows him through his last days at home, the final farewells, his induction and basic training. It is the first time a western film crew has ever filmed freely at a Red Army barracks. After four weeks his parents arrive to watch him take the oath of allegiance that qualifies him as a soldier. It may be the last time they will see him for two years.
