Synopsis

Lyubov Bubulich and Tamara Russo do not mix in the same circles although they are of an age and live in the same small provincial town in Moldavia. For Lyubov is a judge in the local people's court, a Communist Party member, a high wage-earner and married: while Tamara scrubs floors in a local hospital, is not a Party member, earns a miserable wage, and is a widow. But one day the two women do meet - across the floor of courtroom number four. Tamara is on trial: Lyubov is her judge. The maximum sentence she can impose is five years. Their encounter is the first that Western cameras have been allowed to film inside a Soviet court.
