Duration: 44'19''

Synopsis

The last of the 12 Comrades is Dinara Asanova , one of Leningrad's top film directors. For the party bosses cinema is a tool of socialist propaganda; for Dinara it is a means of confronting problems in Soviet society. Tonight's Programme follows her at work and uses examples from some of her controversial films to explore how she managed to get difficult issues past the studio censors. While the BBC was filming Dinara died suddenly of a heart attack. She was 42. Many of her friends travelled thousands of miles to her funeral in the Asian republic where she was born. They talk about the loss her death represents, not only to Soviet cinema, but to their lives as well.
