The Sunday Play | Macbeth (2000)
A 2000 BBC radio adaptation of Shakespeare's play Macbeth. Richard Eyre, one of the country's greatest theatre directors, makes his radio debut in this production of Shakepeare's bloody tragedy, set in a tribal Scotland that is savage but also civilised. To direct a radio play, Eyre observes, you have to close your eyes to the microphones, to the actors clustered around them, to the swatches of chain mail attached to their jeans, and to the studio assistants clashing swords like cutlery. "Close your eyes and you're on a blasted heath." This production was originally broadcast as part of the BBC’s Shakespeare for the New Millennium season on Radio 3, in which the BBC mounted 17 new productions of Shakespeare in the space of four years.
